We believe that play-based learning provides opportunities for children to learn as they discover, create, improvise and imagine.

Our Educational Curriculum has a strong emphasis on play-based learning and recognises the importance of communication and language, and social and emotional development.

The planned and spontaneous learning experiences that the children engage in during their time at St Nicholas Preschool are an extension of the children’s interests, strengths and emerging skills.

  • Here at St Nicholas Preschool, children participate in daily Greek language classes. Classes encompass stories, songs, history and musical expression usilising Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and structured intentional teaching periods . Children are encouraged to collaborate with other preschools across Australia and in Greece to further their understanding of the language and culture.

Recent studies have proven that people who speak more than one language fluently have better memories and are more cognitively creative and mentally flexible than monolinguals.

  • Ready Steady Go provide weekly sports classes promoting physical activity, healthy eating and collaboration. Over the year, the children will learn the fundamentals of 10 different sports (soccer, tennis, basketball, hockey, golf, AFL, rugby, athletics, cricket and T-ball). Each term, 5 sports are taught in 2 week blocks which is considered sufficient time to introduce and reinforce the basic concepts and motor patterns.

Sports classes aim to enhance children’s gross and fine motor skills, encourage their continued participation in sports and prepare them for the early school years. Children will develop greater self-confidence, enhanced self-esteem and a real sense of achievement, all of which shape their physiological wellbeing.

  • The transition to primary school can be a significant event in the life of a child and a positive transition to school has a strong correlation to ongoing achievement and engagement. Here at St Nicholas our preschool children engage in a school readiness program that will prepare than for that transition.

Our School Readiness Program incorporates the not only fundamental numeracy and literacy components, but social and emotional development along with learning to collaborate in small and large groups.

  • We teach our children to become socially responsible and show respect for the environment. We demonstrate the importance of sustainability through gardening, composting, recycling and water conservation.

Under the guidance of their Sustainability Teacher, the children will engage in a range of hands-on experiences promoting sustainability and environmental awareness. These activities include tending to our vegetable garden, learning about natural decomposition through worm farming and composting, and caring for our chickens, fostering valuable skills and values in sustainability and responsible environmental stewardship.
